Remembering September 11th with my students

Wow this was a hard topic for me.  Do you remember how you felt on September 11th?  I was shocked to see that this was ten years ago now.  It doesn't seem that long ago.  This to me is a really hard thing to teach to 7 year olds.  I was almost at a loss on how to cover this and what to cover.  We are covering how to be a good citizen and identifying good citizens.  My team thought what better way than to discuss all of the heroes from September 11th.  We have loads of technology and I was super pumped.  I went home and began working on youtube videos and more.  It didn't take long before I had no idea how to cover this.  I decided not to discuss terrorists or show the planes crashing into the towers.  I just thought that was a little scary for my students (and me).  So I took more of the hero route.  I created a powerpoint that has pictures of firefighters, a fireboat, and a few videos.  I found an excellent video on discovery education.  If you have a subscription with discovery education the video is called Reading Rainbow: The Tin Forest.  The students get to meet students that experienced it and they discuss some of their heroes from the tragedy.  Heroes that I would not have thought of for example: grocery store clerks, a hotel, a restaurant.  I will also be using the book FireBoat: The Heroic Adventures of John J Harvey.  See my powerpoint below!  I hope you find this appropriate and are able to use it!
